starting solids around 4 months???

hi all, i started my first 2 children(now four and seven) on solids(farex) at 4 months. They are bright healthy children! What does every one think about this?? I now have a 4 month old and am thinking of starting him on farex too, he seems just as ready as the others did! Wanting to get opinioins from other mums of bubs, since now the reccomendation is starting solids at 6 mths?? What did you do.....

I started my now 18 week old bub on solids just before 16 weeks, she started waking during the night to feed for an hour and she would feed every hour during the day!

Hi Zehra,
I have just started offering my 4mth old son solids. I've read in three different books that if your baby is showing signs of needing more i.e. waking for more feeds, eating their hands after milk feeds and/or looking at your food; staring the solids process at 4mths is OK as by 6 months you really want them to be getting the full nutritional value from their solids. I give 2 tsp of farex mixed with his milk at his mid morning feed halfway between his milk feed. 5 days later I added pureed pears with it as he was not enjoying the taste of farex on it's own. He loves the pears. By week 3 I will introduce 2 tsp of pureed pumkin/potatoe inbetween the afternoon feed. It seems to take a while for them to enjoy the taste/texture and it's important NOT to try solids at the last day feed so you can tell what doesn't agree with them (i.e they aren't going to bed at night with a tummy ache). It's also important to introduce around 10 - 15ml of water inbtween feeds once on solids for digestive system. (i've just been doing it twice a day). Admittedly he is taking longer to get no.2's out (but he has always has this problem when introducing something new i.e. formula too) - I give a little bit of unsweetened prune juice mixed with water in the arvo of day 2 if he hasn't had a movement.....it works well....and the funny thing is he now loves the taste of it - so that too tells me the starting solids will be a process before he enjoys the taste of solids and eats them fully.

Hi, I didn't start my son on solids until he was 6 months however he was on fomula from 5 weeks old which filled him up a lot more than breastfeeding does. I was also told by the health nurse not to start babies on solids until 6months but you are their mum and you know what is best. If you think you little one is ready give it a try. He/she will tell you if they aren't ready for it just yet.

hi..im like max...started at 3.5 months . i believe in doing what your baby wants and if u make him/her some food and they open their mouths to it, its their choice in the end. self weaning is the way to go i reakon :)

I started giving my baby some banana and avocado at 4 months. Not to replace his breastfeeds, but just a little to try different tastes and get used to a spoon. He seems to like this little feeds and opens his little mouth for more.

I started my son at 3.5 months with the advice of a doctor. By 4 months old he was having 3 meals a day and 3 to 4 bottles.

hey teddysmum, i have a little boy who is 4.5 months old and a week ago he started showing signs of being ready for solids. my community health nurse told me to increase his bottles from having 5 250ml bottles a day to 7 250ml bottles instead of giving him solids. i didnt feel entirely comfortable with him having so much formula so i spoke to my doc and a few other community nurses and found out there is a push to start babies on solids closer to 4 months rather than 6 months and that the only reason everyone says 6 months is because of the push from WHO to exclusively breastfeed til then. my baby boy has been on solids for 2wks now and is much happier and more content and is having a more acceptable 5 200ml bottles a day. hope this helps!

i have 2 girls aged 6 and 3 and i started my eldest on solids at around 11 months old as i was breast feeding and she wasnt intrested in solids at all. i ahd to force er to eat them i breast fed her til she was 15 months old. my youngest was a lil different she couldnt start solids due to an operation she ha to have at 6 months but she was quite content with breast milk til i had to stop feeding her when i developed mastitis in one breast and it was hrd to feed from the one side all the time wakin in the morning with one breast as big as a watermelon and the other flat as paper. but she started solids at 10 months and was off breast milk at 11 months as my milk dried up. i would have fed her for longer if i could have. as its more convenient for me of a night to latch her on adn fall asleep during feeds. lol
but its really up to you and whether your baby is ready for them.

hi all, i have 2 sons & with my eldest i started him on rice cereal also at the age of 4months. however my youngest is 11wks & at his 6wk check up his pediatrian told me to start giving him yogurt. not because of lake of weight but because he had alot of wind & used his bowls after every feed. it seemed to settle things down & he looks forward to his little meal a day :)

Having had 5 kids and starting the older ones on solids early i've held off with my younger two until they were over 7months.Solids in no way helped my others to sleep through as i was told it would, and whether your breast or bottle, bubs gets all the nutrition they need from milk until 6mths old.Even after that i dont believe in shoveling purees down their throats.I let them explore the food, they'll eat it if they want. And as for bubs watching what you eat as a sign of readiness for food? Well my 8mth old likes to watch me drive too,but im not about to let him take the car for a spin! All just my humble opinion though ;-)

Jke started on baby rice mixed with some steamed fruit at 4 months and about 2 weeks later had some sweet potato, then some carrot, them some pumpkin all of them were mixed with his forumla to make a smooth consistency and with some baby rice added as well. I have never pureed them just mashed with a fork and he is now 6 months and I use a rotary grater for him to have chicken, liver, lamb, fish etc mixed with his veggies. I also male up a white auce with a little cheese to add some different flavour etc. I always steam his veggies. He has baby cereal, farex fruity museli or similar etc, that and the forumla are the only "baby" foods I use, the rest is all home cooked. He is able to feed himself with a little piece of toast or muffin if that is what I am having for breakfast and we went out to lunch the other day and he munched his way through a chip, I bit the ends off and blew on it to cool it down then he demolished 3 of them!

I know there are different trains of thought but go with your instincts, bubs was more than ready, he would reach our and try and grab for our food and watched like a hawk when we were eating, the first time I gave him a tiny piece of banana he chewed it for ages and ages and then opened his mout for more so I figured he was ready.
